SAT Reading: Text Structure and Purpose in Classical Musicology

In classical musicology, commentators long categorized mid-nineteenth-century symphonies as strict adherence to standardized structural patterns. Musicologist Elena Rostova, however, challenges this conventional view by analyzing thematic shifts in lesser-known orchestral scores from that period. Rostova reveals that composers frequently integrated subtle harmonic disruptions that destabilized expected musical resolutions.
